So, first thing´s first, I LOVE taking fotos, but I basically have no idea what I´m doing. What I do, I do off pure instinct or from what I´ve learned playing around with cameras and photoshop. One thing´s for sure, though, the closer you look and the more you pay attention, the more you learn. I´m the type of person that soaks in images, colors, tones, composition. Especially when I like what I see, I try to register what it makes me feel the first second I see it, and then proceed to "tear it apart" and figure out why I like it so. I am self taught in many ways, and I deeply believe that those moments that we sometimes take for granted, hold infinite opportunities to learn something new in the most exciting way.
Lo primero es lo primero, AMO tomar fotos , pero en general no sé lo que estoy haciendo. Lo que hago, lo hago de puro instinto, o de lo que he ido aprendiendo de jugar con la cámara y el fotoshop. Pero de una cosa estoy segura, cuanto más observas y pones atención, más aprendes. Soy el tipo de persona que absorbe imagen, color, tono, composición cual esponja. Especialmente si me gusta lo que veo, trato de registrar lo que me hace sentir el segundo de mi primer encuentro, y después paso a "desbaratarlo" y averiguar porqué es que me gusta tanto. Soy autodidacta en tantas cosas, y creo profundamente que algunos de esos momentos que suelen pasar desapercibidos, guardan infinidad de oportunidades de aprender cosas nuevas de la manera más emocionante.
So down to business:
The questions I was asked, concerning photography, were:
Q: What kind of camera do you use? (I´m quietly laughing a bit right now)
A: A SONY Cyber-shot (14.1 megapixels) I bought at the super market (reason why I was quietly laughing). I grew up with my dad´s old Pentax around my neck. I´ve always been a photo-junkie and I´ve been dragging a camera around with me since I was 13. So, I can tell you, if you feel the need to take great photos, don´t let anything stop you, not even the lack of a decent camera. Of course, deep inside (or not so deep at all, I constantly repeat it) I long for a Lomo a Holga and a "real" camera (3 cameras!), but I repeat, I will not let anything stop me from click, click, clicking my way through life.

Las preguntas que me hicieron con respecto a la fotografía fueron:
P: ¿Qué clase de cámara utilizas? (en este instante río un poquito)
R: Una SONY Cybershot (14,1 megapixeles) que compré en el super (razón por la cuál me río un poquito). Crecí con la vieja Pentax de mi papá colgada del cuello 24 horas al día desde que tengo 13 años. Así que, puedo asegurarte, si tienes la necesidad de tomar fotografías hermosas, no dejes que nada te detenga, ni siquiera la falta de una cámara decente. Claro que en el fondo (o no tan en el fondo, lo repito constantemente) añoro una Lomo, una Holga y una cámara "de verdad" (¡3 cámaras!), pero insisto, no dejaré que nada me detenga de retratar mi camino por la vida.
Q: What to do, after having taken a picture, just to give it your on personal touch and have fun?
A: I used to depend a whole lot on my Photoshop. But my computer died and I felt sheer panic. Good thing is, I found Picnik. I have the best time using this free toy!!! I don´t treat my family photos the same i would my "product photography". So keep this in mind as you continue to read ("Product Photography Tutorial" will be the next post).
P: ¿Qué hago después de haber tomado la foto para hacer que luzca y personalizarla?
R: Solía depender muchísimo de mi Fotoshop. Pero cuando mi computadora murió entré en auténtico pánico y me quedé sin nada. Lo bueno es que descubrí Picnik. ¡Me divierto de lo lindo usando este juguete gratis! No trabajo mis fotos familiares de la misma manera en la que trabajo mi "fotografía de producto". Tengan esto en mente mientras continúan leyendo ("Fotografía de Producto" será el siguiente post)
So this is how I start off:
In this particular photo I didn´t need to crop it in any way because I liked the composition as it was, but sometimes it will be necessary.
Así es como comienzo:
En esta foto en particular no tuve que recortar porque me gustó la composición tal cual estaba, pero muchas veces recortar será necesario.
First thing I always adjust is "exposure and contrast". When you work with this type of photo, there´s really no 1 rule to stick to. It all depends on the time of day the picture was taken, the lighting, etc. So what I do is play around with the "exposure and contrast" at the same time, until it looks right to me. Try to leave it subtle because you still have to adjust color.
Lo primero que siempre hago es ajustar "exposición y contraste". Cuando trabajas con este tipo de fotos no hay una sola regla clara a la cual apegarse. Todo depende de la hora del día en la que fue tomada, la luz, etc. Así que lo que hago es jugar un poco con la "exposición y contraste" al mismo tiempo, hasta que para mi se ve bien. Trata de dejar que el resultado sea sutíl ya que aun falta ajustar el color.
Now for color. What I do is "saturate" the color, and if it goes too yellow on me, I bring the "temperature" down. Don´t forget to play around and experiment until it looks just right.
Ahora para el color. Lo que hago es "saturar" el color, y si se ve demasiado amarillento, le bajo a la "temperatura". No olviden jugar un poco hasta que quede justo como te gusta.
Once you´ve finished adjusting exposure, contrast, color saturation and temperature, you can either leave it like this, or play around and create. Personally, if I were to leave my photo with no extra filter or effect, I maybe would of toned it down a bit. But I usually don´t stop here. I LOVE using the 1960´s effect:
Una vez que hayas terminado de ajustar la exposición, y la saturación y temperatura del color, puedes dejarlo así o divertirte un poco creando. Personalmente, si fuera a dejar mi foto asi, sin ingún filtro o efecto adicional, hubiera dejado los cambios un poco menos drásticos. Pero normalmemte no paro aquí. Me ENCANTA usar el efecto "1960":
or the Holga-ish effect
(the Lomo-ish effect is cool too, but it has to suit your picture and the effect you want to give it)

Definitely had to crop it a bit to help out with the composition.

Color: I saturated and HAD to bring down the temperature to get rid of the horrible yellow caused by the artificial lighting.

I then started to have fun with "text" and "stickers". You can also play around with frames and adjust their color to match or contrast your picture.
I LOVE going crazy and trying everything out, depending on what mood I´m in that day. It´s not like you´re getting a tattoo, you can always erase it if you don´t like it... so go for it! Have fun, go crazy, romantic, or silly!
Después empiezo a divertirme creando con los "textos" y "adhesivos". También puedes jugar con los marcos, ajustar sus colores para combinar o contrastar con tus fotos.
AMO dejarme ir y probar todo, dependiendo del humor en el que me encuentro ese día. No es como si te estuvieras tatuando, siempre puedes borrar lo que no te haya convencido... ¡así que atrévete! ¡Diviértete, ponte loca, romántica, chistosa, lo que sea!
