beautiful minds + beautiful summer

summer puts lots of time on our hands. we love to enjoy nature, but can´t be out all the time (especially because we have very rainy summers on this side of the world). therefore, t.v can be a temptation. although i have nothing against choosing a good movie or an interesting documentary once in a while, i know that, with all this time on their hands my kiddo´s can declare a state of boredom, go on strike and start looking towards the idiot box (as my mama used to call it) for  a way out. as i have said before, caring for their minds is as important to me as their bodies and their health. the effect that television can have on their beautiful minds is shocking . so it´s my job to not only say "no", but to offer options and get involved, down and dirty with paint, newspaper and scissors showing them all the options that summer can offer. show them how true creativity can make them feel happier and better about themselves. here are a few craft ideas from my Pinterest craft board that we had on our summer to-do list.

for more info on the negative effects TV has on children i have included an interesting documentary on children and media at the end of this post.

an interesting video that adresses the issue of media + children through a more cientific approach:

although one of my children is in a Waldorf School, my younger daughter is in a Montessori school, my opinion about TV and children is wonderfully described by the following video, a more spiritual approach to the media + children issue :

busy hands: summer / manitas curiosas: verano

 photo DSC_0053_zpsac1af069.jpg photo DSC_0049_zps297a2462.jpg photo DSC_0047_zps32c65c0d.jpg photo DSC_0043_zpsa7c18ed4.jpg photo DSC_0061_zpsa7d05e58.jpg photo DSC_0066b_zpsf3167c82.jpg photo DSC_0059c_zps4c19f535.jpg photo DSC_0054_zps94a92064.jpg photo DSC_0055_zps2787ee41.jpg
I believe that caring for my child´s mind and soul is just as important as caring for his or her body. health is a tree that grows skyward. it has many roots and cannot be sustained in all it´s beauty if only one of it´s roots is strong and healthy. so this is one of the ways i express my profound love for my children. i show them how to create whatever it is they desire, walk with them and guide them towards feeling empowered by the fact that:

1. they do not need external stimulation such as TV -or any other technologic crutch- to not "be bored".
2. they can begin to experiment, from a very young age, what it means to be able to create something they wish for, therefore re-evaluating and re-creating  the true meaning of the word "worth".

imagine, then make it happen.

little G made herself a camera like mama´s. she runs around with it all day long. big G made his first tote bag from scratch and is now making more to sell and be able to buy himself a skateboard and a violin.

my little book worm / mi pequeña come libros

her favorite time of day? bed time. that´s when she can cuddle in bed with a book. she used to ask for me to read to her every night, but now that she´s 7, she comes home from school everyday, excited to show me her "book of the day". she brings a different one back from the "class library" every single day, and even though i try to tell her that there´s no hurry, that she should take her time with each book, she dives into the story and won´t stop until she finds out "what happens at the very end!" i am amazed and delighted by the respect and love she has developed for books, and the wonder with which she opens each one, smelling it´s pages, just like her mama does. i guess all those bedtime stories turned this little one into a bookworm.

individuality + little people

 photo DSC_0004_zpsa45c8b09.jpg

When I was a little girl, I was big sister to a intensely colorful (as much in spirit as in appearance) little girl named Mina. Let me tell you, she would drive me crazy. I was the kind of kid that didn´t really want to stand out in a crowd, and Mina was constantly making that a excruciatingly diffcult task. But I think that what truly drove me up-the-wall-insane was the fact that my mom would actually allow her to leave the house wearing a red pleated kilt with a purple polkadot blouse (don´t even get me started on the footwear). I would constantly ask my mom why she let the kid leave the house looking like a crazy bag lady. My mother would very calmly answer, "If she feels beautiful, she can wear whatever combination her heart desires". Obviously not the answer I was looking for.

Déjame decirte, me volvía loca.

As time went on, and I turned into a even more self-conscious teen, I promised myself that when I had children I would love them silly, but would never, ever be that mom that allows her kid to walk into a restaurant wearing sweat pants pulled so far to the side that it looks like one butt cheek is on steroids while the other clearly did not get enough to eat. Or the kind of mother that is apparently oblivious to the fact that to that her child has dirty super hero rainboots attatched to his/her feet as if life depended on it. No sir. Not me.

No señor. Yo no.
 photo DSC_0014_zps53846a43.jpg
So here I am, many years and 2 kids later and I have thankfully matured a bit. I confess that now, when I see my skinny little midget run around the house in her favorite pink stained-at-the-knees-PJ´s and I notice the butt thing going on, I actually sigh (the lost-in-love kind of sigh, not the breath-deep-so-as-to not-throw-up kind of sigh). My kiddo´s have shiny personalities. Thank God for that. I realize their "experiments in fashion" will not always be worthy of street fashion photography, but honestly, that is absolutely of no importance. What is important is that what they consider to be beautiful or interesting be a healthy way of letting their individuality shine through. I can´t isolate them from the world and what we are told is "cool" or simply "normal" (hint at the unreasonable proportions on Barbie dolls dressed in tiny mini skirts and bra tops) but that´s where I consider having an open communication, setting a positive example, and working on their self esteem a priority. Now that´s important.

Gracias  a Dios.

 photo DSC_0009_zpsc3d60707.jpg
I believe that when we put too much weight on how they look, or what they´re wearing, we´re giving our children the message that what others think of us is of more value than what we think of ourselves. And the only person who´s opinion of them I´m worried about is their own. Their self image should be based on love and respect for themselves, their bodies and the freedom they deserve when exploring ways of expressing their beautiful personalities, while learning the fundamental lesson of self respect. So if what makes my "little" feel beautiful is a color clash party, or a corny collection of headbands smothering her beautiful head of curls, (as long as what she´s wearing is weather appropriate -I have to constantly draw the line at cute little sandals in winter boot weather-), and I see her beaming, so proud of the little person she is deciding to be, then all I have to do is say,  "Ready to go, beautiful?".

Thoughts on Limits / Pensamientos sobre Límites

You don´t need eyes to see, you need vision
Maxi Jazz

Kids will always push boundaries, looking for limits. I, as a mama, always look for healthy ways to set them. I truly believe, from the bottom of my heart, that limits set strongly, clearly and lovingly are one of the most important ways of expressing love for your child. To me, "loving limits" means learning how to give a big, fat, clear "NO" without emotion. When I say "without emotion" I´m not talking about the "Luke, I am your father" type of lack of emotion. Rather more like learning how to not get hooked on the waves of frustration, anger, guilt (amoung other emotions) that can easily rise with the exhaustion and helplessness a parent can feel at times. TOTALLY NORMAL. I don´t think there is a parent on this planet that has never felt like screaming his or her head off, while feeling it would clearly rotate on it´s axis if it were humanly possible.

A clear mind, helps to set healthy boundaries with a quiet heart. It gives you time to think before acting, therefore you are in control. I, personally, was not born with a clear mind. I´m half latin, half italian...I´ve got a screamer in me. But I decided that wasn´t the way I wanted to raise my kids, not only because it wouldn´t be fair to them, but because it would not bring me peace. Personally, ecuanimity , the capability of stepping back and breathing BEFORE I decide to act, is something that does not come naturally. I have practiced, and practiced. In short, I think "mommy-cool" is an emotional muscle we all have. Meaning we all have the capability to develope that muscle. Could you run a marathon without training? No. Well, the "mommy-cool" muscle doesn´t jump into action at full speed just cause we REALLY REALLY want it to. You gotta do the excercise. Then fail. And try again. Guess it´s better than not trying. Right? Start by trying to set an "easy" boundary without feeling a negative or guilt ridden emotion. We gotta start somewhere.

Lo he practicado y practicado. Fallar. Volverlo a intentar.

Last week I went to one of our Montessori "school for parents" nights. The theme was precisely: limits. I thought sharing my favorite pointers of the night would be a special way to get across where I´m at as a mamita, before saying goodbye for now:

1. Limits well set turn into healthy habits, and this paves the road for a child with the capacity for self-regulation. Blind discipline only creates children that behave with "authority" present. Once they´re left alone (as eventually happens to us all as we grow) they no longer feel the need to continue to obey limits because there is no one to impose them anymore. That is where the importance of consecuences step in. A child must learn that there are always consecuences to every action. Good consecuences, bad consecuences, subtle consecuences, obvious consecuences. We must allow them to make decisions (consistent with their age), after being told what the consecuences would be depending on the path they choose, so that they can develop responsibility, that will in time allow them to self-regulate. Stick to the consecuences.

2. Children need parents. They need their parents to be parents, not their friends. This isn´t terrible. A parent is not only the person who sets boundaries, but also the person that keeps them safe, orients them, listens, has warm hugs and kisses that can make any boo-boo or broken heart better just by being there. There is no love like mama´s and papa´s.

3. Children want to feel loved. They want to feel they belong. They want attention. Give them positive attention so that they won´t go looking for your negative attention. Remember that the "bad" things they do sometimes get our attention faster than the "good" things. They´ll go looking for the "bad" if they need to.

4. Look at their attitude as a symptom. Ask yourself: is there something going on in my child´s life, home, school, family right now that could be leading him to act this way? Does he need help? AND always ask yourself, "HOW AM I feeling when I set limits?" (and we´re back to the very first paragraph of all this bla-bla)

5. Not getting what one wants causes frustration. It is very important for our children to develop tolerance to frustration. The only thing that helps develop this tolerance is frustration itself (we can help ration the amount of frustration they must deal with all at once, depending on their age and circumstance).

6. Acknowledge your child´s achievements, the positive consecuences he lives due to his own hard work.

Simplifying / Simplificando

Photobucket

Filling our afternoons with music, boardgames, books, homemade treats, garden time. Keeping it simple. I must admit, sometimes I tell myself it´d be easier to pop in a movie and have the kids sit still for a while (not that I don´t do it from time to time). But to be perfectly honest, it doesn´t work that way. TV works them up. It gets their brains working on overdrive in the worst possible way.
I find that that extra time I put into making their afternoons healthy in every possible way, turns into kids wanting to get into bed at 8pm with soft lights and a lovely book. And mama sleeps better knowing I truly gave them my best.

Llenando nuestras tardes de música, juegos de mesa, libros, delicias caseras, tiempo de jardín. Simplificando.

Rainy Summer Home-Schooling

Verano, Lluvia y Escuelita en Casa

It´s Summer, it´s rainy and school´s almost out. Considering we´ll be staying home and boredom is not an option, I figured I could give my loves a fun, artsy "home-summer-school-whatchamacallit" (how´s that for a braincramp?).

I´ve been hard at work organizing the calender, schedule, projects and a long list of material I have to gather from our recycling bin or buy. It´s A LOT of work, but we´re all excited! I thought it would be a good idea (since it has been a lot of work) to share our calendar and ideas with my sweet readers, making it easy to follow and be inspired. But give me a few more days, it still needs a bit of fine tuning... But meanwhile, here are some hints:

There´ll be a bit of gardening

Habrá un poco de jardinería

a bit of baking

un poco de cocina

LOADS of crafts

un MONTÓN de manualidades

and I want to choose a book they can both understand and enjoy,
and read to my beautifuls

because I love them, and this is the way I love to love:
nurturing

nutriendo

love & education / amor y educación

My husband and I, as parents, chose a Montessori education for our children.
Finding the right Montessori school wasn´t easy, but I´m happy to say we have. We´re happy and at peace with our decision. But most importantly, our beautifuls are happy and at peace with the "other half" of their lives.

I mean, think about it, they spend half their day at school, 5 days a week, add it up! This means the affective, learning and social experiences they encounter at school is almost half of what they will retain from their entire childhood.

So, adding up is what has made us take this part so seriously. If we want our children to learn how to be indepedent, creative, responsible beings, aware of what surrounds them, and capable of finding solutions; beings that learn to love to learn to love...and on it goes...well then, we need help.

For us, what we teach at home must be consistent with what they learn at school.
Sometimes I think, there are soooo many things that matter. So many things I pay attention to as a mom, that it can at times seem overwhelming. But I´ve found that I have simply found ways of incorporating this into my every day life without questioning how much "easier" life would be if we were "normal". "Normal" is not an option if it can cause damage.

Yes, it can be complicated at times, but not having to swim against the current as far as school goes, definitely helps. I don´t have to work twice as hard trying to "reteach" my kids whenever they get back from school asking for a chocolate bar, a soda, asking why they can´t have an i-phone while heading straight for the TV.

For us it´s important that our children learn responsibility with heart: how to take care of others, take care of their own bodies, minds, souls, their surroundings, their home, planet, etc...

And yes, this starts at home, but consistency takes what mom and dad teach a looong way.

For me, building a home for my children, educating, feeding and raising them, is an act of love.

Time flies. Kids grow so fast. I chose to be a mom. More than choose, I asked for it with all my heart. Being a mom implies a lot, and I plan to enjoy every moment of it, even the not so fun parts, because behind all the caos and the hard bits, there still are no words to explain how much larger my heart has become because of my beautiful family:
bendiciones.

blessings.

Why my Kids Love Going 2 School / Porqué mis Hijos Aman ir a la Escuela

I feel blessed, my kids love school. Mommy and daddy have done all they can to give them an option that is consistent with what we teach at home. We keep things simple, we recycle, we eat natural and healthy, we try to steer clear of the claws of mass production and consumerism and we refab, refashion and sew our way to a closet full of color. We have a simple home filled to the brim with love: blessed. My kids are kids that enjoy and bloom in a Montessori school. I know and understand the fact that not all kids flourish in a Montessori education. But the fact is that mine do, and I love this...I love that they love this. Today they had a school fair and we had loads of creative fun!
Giaco in a mask he made, and cape that mommy made.
Isn´t this awsome? School looked more like a circus than a school today. It was great!

My sweet angel was supposed to be a mix between a monkey and a cat = CUTE!
