Greening our planet is more than a romantic notion of nature or recycling. It is a way of life, a commitment. There are so many things that can be done. These things may seem small, but when you add up all the small things you´ve greened in your life, you realize how far you´ve come and how much further you are capable of going. It is a beautiful journey. For us as parents it is very important that our children know of the world they were born into, of what it was like before, and all that is being destroyed in the name of “normal” and “comfort”. We have raised our children with an understanding of the world around them and the consequences that our action or inaction could have on the planet. We don´t use plastic, don´t eat junk food, we buy organic at the farmer´s market, have chickens and a veggie garden (among many other things). We, as a family, have consciously chosen to live this way not just for the benefit of ourselves, but out of respect for Mother Earth.

"En-verdecer" nuestro planeta es más que una noción romántica de la naturaleza o el reciclado. Es una forma de vida, un compromiso. Hay tantas cosas que se pueden hacer. Pueden parecer pequeñas, pero cuando sumas todas las cosas de tu vida que has "en-verdecido", te das cuenta de lo lejos que has llegado y cuánto más eres capaz de lograr. Es un viaje maravilloso. Para nosotros, como padres, es muy importante que nuestros hijos sepan del mundo en el que viven y de las consecuencias que nuestras acciones -o la falta de- puedan tener sobre el planeta. No usamos plástico, no consumimos chatarra, compramos orgánico en el mercado de productores locales, tenemos gallinas y un huerto (entre muchas otras cosas). Nosotros, como familia, hemos conscientemente elegido vivir de esta manera, no solo por beneficio propio, sino por respeto a nuestra Madre Tierra.

Some facts about plastic:

Plastic never decomposes. Just about every piece of plastic ever made is still around today. It takes nearly 1000 years to begin composting.
Americans generate more than 10.5 million tons of plastic waste a year but recycle only 1 or 2 % of it.
Plastic buried deep in landfills can leach harmful chemicals that spread into groundwater.
The world’s annual consumption of plastic has increased from around 5 million tons in the 50′s to nearly 100 million tons today.
Next year, more than 300 million tons will be produced worldwide.
Chemicals added to plastics are absorbed by human bodies. Some of these compounds have been found to alter hormones or have other potential human health effects.
Plastic bags and other plastic garbage thrown into the ocean kill as many as 1 million sea animals each year.
24 million gallons of oil are needed to produce a billion plastic bottles.
The federal standards for tap water are higher than those for bottled water.

Algunos datos sobre el plástico:

El plástico nunca se degrada. Prácticamente cada pieza de plástico jamás fabricada aún persiste. Toma aproximadamente 1000 años en comenzar a descomponerse.
Solo en México el consumo aparente del año 2005 fue de 49 kg/habitante, considerando que los residuos plásticos al año son alrededor de 1,121,000 ton, recolectándose únicamente 12% del plástico desechado.
Los plásticos enterrados profundamente en rellenos sanitarios pueden filtrar químicos tóxicos que contaminan el agua del subsuelo.
El consumo mundial de plástico ha aumentado de aproximadamente 5 millones de toneladas en los años 50 a casi 100 millones de toneladas en la actualidad.
El próximo año, más de 300 millones de toneladas será producida a nivel mundial.
Los químicos con los que se fabrican los plásticos son absorbidos por el cuerpo humano. Algunos de estos componentes alteran las hormonas o tienen otros potenciales efectos dañinos para la salud humana.
Las bolsas de plástico y otros desperdicios plásticos tirados al mar matan hasta 1 millón de animales marinos cada año.
24 millones de galones de aceite son necesarios para producir 1 billón de botellas de plástico.

I´m always looking for ways to get the children actively and creatively involved. The other day little G made our citronella cleaner all by herself, from the garden to the kitchen, and she exuded happiness. Allowing children to be a part of the change helps them feel involved in something big and wonderful. Not only being told what to do and what not to do, what to eat and what not to eat, but understanding the why, being part of the how. One of our favorites is making tote bags. My kiddo´s have even started their own little tote bag business. They draw, mama sews and then they save up for art supplies or help pay for school camp, raising awareness in the process.

Siempre estoy en busca de maneras de involucrar activa y creativamente a nuestros hijos en nuestros cambios. El otro día G chica hizo nuestro limpiador de citronella sin ayuda, desde el jardín, hasta la cocina, y rebosaba de felicidad. Permitir que los niños participen del cambio les ayuda a sentirse parte de algo grande y maravilloso. No solo obedecer: qué sí se les permite hacer, qué no, qué sí pueden comer. Sino entendiendo el porqué, siendo parte del cómo. Unos de nuestros favoritos es hacer bolsas tote. Mis hijos incluso han comenzado su pequeño negocio de bolsas. Ellos dibujan, mamá cose y pueden entonces ahorrar para su material de arte, o para ayudar a pagar para su campamento, mientras despiertan conciencia.
