Flea Markets, Farm Sales, anything to satisfy my deep melancolic need for rust and chipped paint. But where I live, none of the above are an option. I have to bend over backwards to find battered beauties for my home. Sometimes I just wish this creative process could be less difficult, something more like this:

I wanted to do something nice for my sweet mama. She´s about to come home from one of her long trips to our Peru, and I always like it when she finds something sweet and different on her return. This time it was:

Quería hacer algo lindo para mi preciosa mamita. Está a punto de regresar de uno de sus viajes largos a nuestro amado Perú, y me gusta cuando encuentra dulces detallitos a su regreso. Esta vez fué su "Fuchi Corcho Renovado"!

I have all these things stashed in hidden corners, under tables and inside boxes. I like to call them little treasures, but I sometimes feel

I´m turning into somewhat of a hoarder. Then projects like these come along, and there´s this little voice inside me tht says, "See! I told you this would all come in handy someday!"

(And so begins another year of hoarding)

Tengo todas estas cosas guardadas en rincones secretos, debajo de mesas y en infinidad de cajitas. Me gusta llamarlos mis pequeños tesoros, pero a veces siento que me voy conviertiendo, lentamente, en pepenadora. Pero de pronto aparecen proyectos como estos y hay una vocesita dentro de mi que grita, "¡Ves, te lo dije que todo esto sería de utilidad algún día!"

(Y así comienza un año más de pepenar)

¡ Desperté esta mañana determinada a revivir el deprimente corcho de mi mamá al estilo gitano!

So this is what I had for breakfast (hence the 10 am heartburn): coffee, glue gun and "treasures".

Quick Cushion Refab Tutorial / Tutorial Cojín: Cambio de Look Express

I´ve decided I´m going to start refabing my house on a budget. That way I feel like something´s getting done while we wait many long months, staring at the penny jar and making plans, until we can remodel our home (on a budget as well, but not quite as tight as the one I´ll be working on now). So I started with the couch, slip cover and all, but for now I´ll be posting only the cushion refab tutorial.

He decidido que voy a comenzar a refrescar mi casa, lentamente, y con poco presupuesto. De esta manera sentiré que algo se está haciendo, mientras esperamos largos meses, mirando al cochinito, haciendo planes, para poder remodelar de manera más formal (también con presupuesto bajo, pero no tan apretado). Así que comenzé con el sillón, forro y todo, pero por ahora estaré posteando solo el cambio de look de los cojines.

Proximamente: ¡Tutorial para Forro Improvisado de Sillón ! I have a colorful house that wouldn´t ever allow me to forget how latin I am. It´s quite eclectic, I like thinking and acting outside the box...can´t help it. But reality is, my kids have left my couch looking "way yucky". Seriously, one stain over the other, until you can´t remember which one came first, and weather it was breakfast, lunch, dinner or the dog. So, despite my colorful inclinations, this time around I had to go with a dark color. It wasn´t easy, and I´ve tried to dress it up with happy cushions. I chose this cotton linen and a chocolate colored ribbon to start off my adventure.

Tengo una casa colorida que jamás me permitiría olvidar lo latina que soy. Es bastante ecléctica, me gusta pensar y actuar fuera del cuadro... no lo puedo evitar. Pero la triste realidad es que mis hijos han dejado mi sillón en condiciones sencillamente "fuchis". En serio, una mancha sobre la otra, hasta que no logras recordar cual vino primero, y si fue el desayuno, la comida, la cena o el perro. Así que, a pesar de mis inclinaciones coloridas, esta vez tuve que optar por un color oscuro. No fue fácil, y he intentado decorarlo con cojines alegres. Escogi este lino y listón color chocolate para comenzar mi aventura.

I´ve made soooo many cushions in my life time. I´ve got my recipe down by heart, it´s practically fool proof, and it can get done in no time. Even so, remember part of my "personal style" is imperfect and totally crooked, so bare with me (this is what I meant by "practically fool proof").
Step 1: Grab the fabric you´ve chosen and the cushion you want to refab. Fold the fabric in half, front sides facing. Pull the bottom fabric out a bit, so that you have extra fabric. Place the cushion on top, just to make sure you have enough, then cut.

He hecho tántos forros para cojín en esta vida. Tengo mi receta y podría hacerlo a ojo cerrado, es prácticamente a prueba de tontos, y se puede hacer en super poco tiempo. Aún así, recuerden que parte de mi "estilo personal" es imperfecto y totalmente chueco, así que tenganme piedad ( a es to me refería con "practicamente a prueba de tontos").
Paso 1: Toma la tela que hayas escogido y el cojín que deseas "refrescar". Dobla la tela a la mitad, anverso contra anverso. Jala la tela de abajo hasta que quede un poco de tela de sobra saliendo por un lado. Coloca el cojín encima para corroborar que tienes suficiente tela. Luego corta.
Here you can see what I mean a bit better. The bottom fabric is the one we will pull to have that extra piece we need.
Aquí podrás ver un poco mejor a lo que me refiero. La tela de abajo es la que jalaremos para tener ese pedazo extra que necesitamos.
Step 2: Take your fabric, fold over and sew the two short ends.
Paso 2: Toma tu tela y coce el doblés a los bordes de los dos extremos más cortos.

Sorry, I didn´t flip the picture over. Please turn head sideways before looking at next image, jaja. This is what both ends should look like:

Perdón no giré la foto. Favor de voltear cabeza de lado antes de ver la siguiente imágen, jiji. Así es como deben quedar los extremos:

Step 3: Now fold your fabric in half and pin where the actual "half" is. Unfold.

Paso 3: Ahora dobla tu tela a la mitad y colca un alfiler donde queda el centro. Desdobla.

Step 4: Now that you know where "half" is, start pinning down your ribbon pleating as you go along. I chose to pleat only the two center ribbons and left the two outer ones extended.

Paso 4: Ahora que sabes donde está la mitad, comienza a fijar tu listón con alfileres, plisando conforme vas avanzando. Yo escogí plisar solo los dos listones centrales y dejar los dos extremos lisos.Like so:

Así:Step 5: Sew down the middle of each ribbon. This is where, even though I´ve pinned them down, I will always find a way of wandering off in some kind of abnormal direction. I´m sure you´ll do better, please share!

Paso 5: Coce el listón a lo largo y justo en medio. Aquí es donde, a pesar de que los he fijado con alfileres, siempre encuentro manera de desviarme en alguna anormal dirección. Estoy segura de que lo podrán hacer mejor, ¡porfavor compartan!

Step 6: Take fabric and fold over old cushion like so. Pull taught and pin. This way you make sure you won´t have an awkward loose fit. Once you´ve pinned, slip old cushion out the bottom.

Paso 6: Toma tela y doble por encima del cojín de la siguente manera. Jala hasta que quede justo y fija con alfileres. De esta manera aseguras no terminar con un cojín demaciado flojo. Una vez que hayas colocado los alfileres, desliza el cojín viejo hacia afuera.Step 7: Pin top and bottom into place making sure it´s folded properly first.

Paso 7: Fija la parte superior e inferior con alfileres, primero asegurando que el doblés haya quedado parejo.

Step 8: Sew closed, and zig zag to avoid fraying. You want this to be machine washable, especially if you´re a mommy like me. Then, turn right side out.

Paso 8: Coce y después termina con zig zag para evitar que se deshilache. Quieres que el forro sea lavable, especialmente si eres mamá como yo. Finalmente, voltéalo.

See? Crooked!
¿Ven? ¡Chueco!This is what the back should look like, and this is where you´ll push the cushion through. I know, it may seem like that´s just not gonna happen, but, believe me, it will.
Así es como se deberá ver la parte de atrás, y por donde deberá entrar el cojín. Lo sé, les va a parecer que es algo imposible, pero creanme, ¡se puede lograr!See?

Note: To make simple cushion covers, like the ones on the front, skip steps 3 through 5.

Gala´s Quilt

This is the perfect example I can use to prove that I´m not exagerating when I say I tend to get into trouble. I was definitely in way over my head on this one and I pulled it off (with charm and the beauty of imperfection, motivated by my blind devotion to my sweet baby girl!). But it was quite the experience, I enjoyed it greatly.

Este es un perfecto ejemplo de cómo tiendo a meterme en problemas. Definitivamente caí en aguas turbulentas con este proyecto, pero lo logré (con encanto y la belleza de lo imperfecto, impulsada por mi ciega devoción por mi nena preciosa!). Definitivamente fue una gran experiencia, lo disfruté treméndamente.


This is the jiggsaw puzzle fase. Complicated, but fun. At this stage I was feeling pretty good about myself. I used dresses Gala has grown out of, my favourite ones, and fabrics I had kept for sentimental reasons.
Esta es la faceta rompecabezas. Complicado pero divertido. En esta etapa del proyecto me sentía bastante bien conmigo misma. Utilizé los vestiditos que ya no le quedan a Gala, los que más me gustan, y telas que había guardado por razones del corazón.



Once I got here, I started panicking. This machine was NOT made for quilting (and it squeeks big time). I didn´t even pick up the camera after this. I had a total meltdown, but after the rain...

Para cuando llegué a este punto, comenzé a entrar en pánico. Esta máquina NO fue hecha para hacer un quilt (y rechina como no tienes una idéa). Después de esto ni siquiera agrré la camara. Tuve una crisis mayor, pero después de la lluvia...


...comes hand basting the quilt... after all that caos, it just seemed straight up relaxing to me!
...viene cocer el bies a mano... y después de tánto caos, me pareció la cosa más relajante!
