busy hands: summer / manitas curiosas: verano

I believe that caring for my child´s mind and soul is just as important as caring for his or her body. health is a tree that grows skyward. it has many roots and cannot be sustained in all it´s beauty if only one of it´s roots is strong and healthy. so this is one of the ways i express my profound love for my children. i show them how to create whatever it is they desire, walk with them and guide them towards feeling empowered by the fact that:

1. they do not need external stimulation such as TV -or any other technologic crutch- to not "be bored".

2. they can begin to experiment, from a very young age, what it means to be able to create something they wish for, therefore re-evaluating and re-creating  the true meaning of the word "worth".

imagine, then make it happen.

little G made herself a camera like mama´s. she runs around with it all day long. big G made his first tote bag from scratch and is now making more to sell and be able to buy himself a skateboard and a violin.

creo que cuidar de la mente y el alma de mis hijos es tan importante como cuidar de su cuerpo. la salud es un árbol que crece hacia el cielo. tiene muchas raíces y no puede ser sostenida en toda su belleza si solo una de sus raíces es fuerte y sana. asi que ésta es una de las maneras en la que expreso mi profundo amor por mis hijos. les enseño a crear lo que desean, camino con ellos y los guío hacia el sentirse empoderados por el hecho de que:

1. no necesitan de estimulación externa tal como la tele -o ninguna otra muleta tecnológica- para no "sentirse aburridos".

2. pueden comenzar a experimentar, desde una temprana edad, lo que significa ser capaces de crear algo deseado, y por lo tanto reconsiderar y re-crear el verdadero significado de la palabra "valor".

imagínalo y después hazlo realidad.

G chica se hizo una cámara como la de mamá. la trae colgada del cuello todo el día. G grande hiso su primera bolsa "de mercado" y ahora está haciendo más para vender y poder comprar su patineta y su violín.

a handmade christmas / una navidad hecha a mano

I love Christmas. I also love the simple life and handmade treasures. This year I made an extra effort so that most of our presents be handmade (except for books and those sturdy new jeans my fast growing teenager desperately needs). My whole family is making the effort of giving away handmade or vintage and, although it´s been a lot of hard work (this is one big peruvian-mexican-italian familia!), it´s made this month a very special one. We´re celebrating this Christmas and New Years at the beach and giving away our heart felt presents by the ocean, accompanied by those we love. That´s what living is all about. These are a few of my handmade gifts:

Amo la navidad. También amo la vida sencilla y los tesoros hechos a mano. Este año hice un gran esfuerzo para que la mayor parte de nuestros regalos fueran hechos a mano (con excepción de libros y los pantalones de mezclilla que mi adolescente en crecimiento necesita con desesperación). Mi familia entera está haciendo el esfuerzo por regalar hecho a mano o vintage y, a pesar de que ha implicado mucho trabajo (¡amo a mi gran familia peruana-mexicana italiana!), ha hecho de este mes uno muy especial. Estamos celebrando esta Navidad y Año Nuevo en la playa y entregando nuestros regalitos del corazón frente al mar, acompañados de nuestros seres queridos. De eso se trata vivir. I finally finished my Willow doily blanket. I found this pattern on Good Knits, a blog I can´t seem to stay away from. The second I layed eyes on this blanket, love at first sight. Didn´t think I was capable of such beauty. I guess I learn something new everyday.  Now I´m on a crochet binge, and totally neglecting my stack of back to school sewing. But I promised myself this Sunday morning was for tackling this procrastination monster in me. So I off to the sewing machine I go!

Finalmente terminé mi cobijita doily Willow. Encontré este patrón en Good Knits, un blog del cual no logro mantenerme alejada. El segundo que vi esta cobijita, amor a primera vista. No pensé que sería capaz de tal belleza. Pero aprendo algo nuevo todos los días. Ahora estoy en una obsesiva producción de crochet, y abandonando por completo mi montaña de costura para el regreso a clases. Me prometí que este domingo sería para derrotar a este monstruo del "pendiente" que vive en mi. ¡Asi que a la máquina de coser se ha dicho!

Monday here in Mexico: Día del Niño (children´s day). Hot. Bare-footin´,  flip-flopping, popsicle eatin´  kind of day. We stayed at home and I decided to celebrate my little ones, spoil them silly and get creative!

Este lunes en México: Día del Niño. Calor. Un día para andar descalzos, de chanclas y comer paletas. Nos quedamos en casa y decidí celebrar a mis pequeños, engreírlos a lo rico y ¡ponernos creativos!

This is something I will not be able to stay away from, even though it looks like it´ll probably make me procrastinate with guilt, then cry, curse at the sewing machine and find a couple a extra grey hairs in my head in the process... and it´s ALL Chris´s fault! (check out her Tutes!) I just think, is she can pull it off... maybe I won´t be able to... but I might as well give it a go!

Esto es algo de lo cual no me podré mantener alejada, aunque se ve como esos proyectos que seguramente me harán posponer con culpa, llorar, insultar a mi maquina de coser y encontrar unas canas demás en mi cabeza en el proceso... ¡y TODO esto será culpa de Chris! (¡echen un ojo a sus tutoriales!) Pienso que si ella lo puede hacer... yo seguramente no podré... ¡pero vale la pena intentarlo!

Featherless Dreamcatcher Tutorial / Atrapasueños sin Plumas: Tutorial

You will need:
*small doilie
*embroidery hoop (or any kind of hoop)
*strips of fabric (recycle what you have lying around!)
*hot glue gun *white cotton strin
*beading thread
*needle
*beads and little treasures hidden in boxes that would otherwise go unused

Necesitarás:
*doilie (tapetito)
*aro para bordar (o cualquier aro)
*tiras de tela rasgada (¡recicla lo que encuentres por la casa!)
*pistola de silicón caliente
*cuerda de algodón blanco
*hilo de pescar
*aguja
*cuentas y tesoritos de joyeros que de otra manera quedarían en el olvido

Embroidery hoops have 2 parts (one inside the other), take them apart. I used both hoops and made 2 dreamcatchers

Los aros para bordar tienen 2 partes (uno dentro del otro), separa las piezas. Yo utilizé ambos aros e hice 2 atrapasueños

Using the beading thread and the needle, start wrapping the thread around the hoop and through the highest part of the doilie, joining both tightly together. Once you´re finished (BEFORE you tie the knot) tighten the thread once again (sort of like tightening shoelaces from the bottom up).

Usando el hilo y la aguja, empieza a envolver el aro, uniendo con el doilie, apretando conforme avanzas. Una vez que hayas terminado (ANTES de amarrar con un nudo) aprieta una vez más el hilo (como cuando aprietas las agujetas de un zapato de abajo hacia arriba).

Once you´ve made it all the way around and tightened the thread, tie a tight knot joining both ends of the beading thread.

Una ves que hayas dado toda la vuelta, y apretado el hilo, amarra unfuerte nudo uniendo ambos extremos del hilo.

Push the doile down towards the "bottom" of the hoop and adjust with your hands. This way the hoop will frame the doilie.

Empuja el doilie hacia la parte "inferior" del aro y acomódalo con las manos. De esta manera el aro enmarcará el doilie.

Now, using wooden beads, glass beads, (feathers would be great...I didn´t have any) anything beautiful you find lying around, make the dreamcatcher hangings. I chose to use cotton string (so that it would match the doilie) and have the beads hanging off the very end, but you can make more elaborate hangings. Be sure to leave enough thread or string so as to tie it to the hoop.

Ahora, usando cuentas de madera, vidrio, (las plumas son lo ideal... pero yo no tenía) cualquier cosa linda que encuentres por ahí, crea lo que va a colgar del atrapasueños. Yo escogí usar cuerda de algodón blanco (para que combinara con el doilie) y colgar cuentas grandes hasta el final de la cuerda, pero puedes hacer creaciones mas complejas. No olvides dejar suficiente hilo o cuerda extra para poderlo amarrar al aro.



Once you´ve finished, grab your hangings and pass the extra string through the back of the hoop where the doilie meets the hoop, adjusting the length to where you like it best and separating them as much as you like. Tie them on with a knot. Then enjoy.

Una ves que hayas terminado los adornos, pasa el hilo de cada uno por la parte trasera del aro, donde el doilie se une con el aro, ajustando el largo a donde más te guste y separándolos o juntándolos como más te plazca. Amarralos con un nudo. Y a disfrutar.
